GERMAN FOR FUN IN DÜSSELDORF

We’ve all been there, standing in a foreign culture finding ourselves pointing, gesticulating and perhaps praying to be understood. Germans mostly speak at least some English.

However, some expats relocating to Düsseldorf may wish to carry a few words with them for use in some of those awkward moments. Basic but perhaps helpful. Good luck with your new adventure!

BEACHES IN DÜSSELDORF

To the surprise of newly arrived expats, some sections of the Rhine in Düsseldorf offer numerous beaches on both banks. The fine sand and shingle are ideal for walking, playing, relaxing and picnicking. Especially on warm and sunny summer days, people flock to enjoy the river.

The topic of German society and its folk are frequently hotly debated with opinions divided. Even many natives themselves claim their compatriots are highly respected, yet they lack humour, are complicated and very reserved.

Large events and activities happen in Düsseldorf throughout the year, some becoming nationally and internationally popular. Carnival is huge, as is the large funfair on the Rhine river bank opposite the old town. Others can have an influence on daily life such as the marathon and other races.

MOVIES IN DÜSSELDORF

Original language movies are popular among expats in Düsseldorf. Films are frequently screened in English at a variety of cinemas in original with subtitles, known as OmU or Original mit Untertitel and without, portrayed as OV or Original Version.

A great way to get to know Düsseldorf is to take an inspiring and rewarding walk, allow impressions to cause a pause, interact and allow details to remain more memorable. Admiring quaint side streets, strolling the promenade, the riverside or numerous woodlands bring joy to the soul.

PETS IN DÜSSELDORF

Germans, on the whole, love and respect pets and are friendly towards dogs. Dogs are permitted on public transport and inside restaurants but keeping a pet on a leash is a must. Dog ownership in Düsseldorf is highly regulated and taxed through a compulsory licence fee.

Located a mere ten kilometres from the city centre, Düsseldorf has one of the world’s most accessible airports. Times for taxi rides can vary enormously depending on the time of day. Public transport includes an S-Bahn train to the terminal, rail to the Skytrain connection or busses.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The public transport system in the city is safe and normally efficient. A dense network of trams above and below ground as well as buses serve the city and its suburbs. Links via the S-Bahn train system reach further outlying areas and neighbouring communities.

Socialising in Düsseldorf

Staying in touch and getting together with others living in a similar situation can be important. Expat groups in social media are highly valuable sources for connecting. Socialising in Düsseldorf can include events, international clubs or heading for a popular spot to meet international residents.
