Founded in 1993, the Filmmuseum is located in Düsseldorf’s old town, Altstadt. Its permanent exhibition reveals insights to the exciting world of movies from its earliest beginnings to present the day. Visitors to the museum can experience the processes of movie production and the impact that film has on everybody’s life.
The museum’s vast archive comprises some 500.000 photographs and 25.000 posters, press kits, news clips, reviews, film programs, scripts, dialogue lists and other production documents. The collection of shadow puppets, Schattenspielfiguren, covers a vast 500 figures from 13th to 19th centuries, historical documents, props, accessories and a stage.
Its permanent exhibition conveys a lively history of film and presents a selection of rare vintage film technology, including an organ from 1928 to accompany silent movies. Camera obscuras and laterna magicas from the 1880s, film projectors and cameras from the early 20th century to the present day, set models, stage design, props and costumes, a replica film studio and a special effects section can also be seen.
The Film Museum is also home to the state’s film collection of more than 6,000 films as well as some 14,000 video tapes and dvd’s and also houses 30.000 books.
