BIKES IN DÜSSELDORF

Riding a bike in Düsseldorf makes sense. It is rather easy to navigate on two wheels with most official paths for cycling recognised by their typical red colour. They can be found throughout the city. One-way streets that show a sign with a bike and the word free, frei, may be used by cyclists against the flow of traffic. In most German cities, cyclists have dedicated traffic lights and Düsseldorf is no exception. Motorists are on the whole considerate and prudent except during times of dense traffic when frustrations can be high.

Germany is very fond of regulations hence there are many specific laws on cycling. One should, for example, only ride on the right side of the road unless it is regulated differently. Cyclists should certainly not drink when on a bike, since the police can confiscate the driver license of someone caught with too much alcohol in the blood.

Known literally as a drive wheel, Fahrrad, the bicycle is highly popular in this country. Germans have the hang of it, as is reflected in the fact that well over ten percent of all distances are covered by bike.  A national adoration of cars remains strong but the locals are catching up with other cities.

Düsseldorf joined other global locations in 2019 by allowing electric scooters into the urban landscape. Opinions are divided between a approval of a viable option for the planet and dismay at where inconsiderate users park them following a journey. Several brands vie for clients, thus adding to the perceived dilemma.
