Since 1984, the Shipping Museum has been located in the Schlossturm, one of the city’s landmarks next to the Rhine. This is the only reminder of the old city castle of Dusseldorf which burned down almost in entirety in 1872. Originally built in the 13th century, the structure was added to in the 16th and yet again in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Visitors can view the history of inland navigation of the river, the development of shipping from the Romans to the present day, tourism, ferries, bridges and harbours in Dusseldorf. Themes concerning the natural environment of the Rhine such as fishing and ecological aspects are also addressed.
The museum offers one of the few magnificent views over the river Rhine and the city of Düsseldorf. The restaurant offers Italian cuisine but unfortunately, the building cannot be barrier free.
