Pubs in Düsseldorf

Frontage of German pub

The variety of pubs in Düsseldorf is quite extraordinary. The traditional local German pub, Kneipe, tends to be very down to earth. Friendly, communicative folks from the neighbourhood mingle well with anyone and everyone from out of town. Most serve home brewed Altbier, old beer, although pilsner is often available.  The lighter brew from Cologne known as Kölsch can also be discovered.

A surprising number of Irish Pubs are available for expats who enjoy their particular atmosphere or looking for a brew with the maltier or traditional tastes of Guinness, Magners and  Murphy’s or perhaps a Kilkenny. Several vie for clientele such as O’reilly’s, McLaughlins, Sutton’s and Sutton’s, while Fatty’s is home to regular expat meet ups.

All open late, most pubs also serve food both in the evening as well as offering lunchtime selections. Indeed, some are more pub than eatery, others more of an eatery than a pub. A few stage live music occasionally.

Fine examples include Zur Uel, Ohme Jupp, Eigelstein, Zum Goldenen Einhorn, Schalander, Hirschchen, Im Goldenen Ring, Frankenheim, Im Goldenen Kessel and Zum Schiffchen, all of which offer their own unique flavour.
